Alcohol and drugs (psychoactive substances) have been a part of human societies around the world for thousands of years and have been used in medicine, religious practices, and celebrations. The intoxicating effects of mood and mind-altering substances are the very reason that they are used at all. Alcohol and drugs change how people feel physically/emotionally and how they perceive the world. People use alcohol and drugs to elevate positive emotions and decrease or escape negative ones. It is not hard to see the appeal and utility of alcohol and drugs, especially when confronted with the problems of life.
There is a dark side to the use of alcohol and drugs. Substance intoxication can lead to poor decision-making, which can have serious consequences for the intoxicated person and others around them. Chronic substance misuse often leads to addiction, physical and mental health problems, deficits in relational functioning, child neglect, poor work/school performance, public safety issues, and financial and legal problems. Substance misuse and addiction is a universal problem that crosses all demographic boundaries.
Substance use, misuse, and addiction have increased in society due to:
substance availability
increases in potency/purity
the creation of new synthetic substances
normalization of substance use
economic hardship
increased isolation
stress and depression
grief during COVID 19
The prevalence of substance use, misuse, and addiction in society, coupled with the widespread damage that it causes, makes it imperative that organizations, families, and individuals possess a foundational understanding of substance use, misuse, and addiction as well as the resources available to help.
Substance misuse and addiction in the workplace is more common than people think. Society often associates substance misuse and addiction with people who dwell on the fringes of society, but in reality, it could be happening in the life of anyone around you. Substance misuse and addiction in the workplace has the potential to impact productivity and create safety issues and negative work environments. Often, supervisors and human resource staff are in the best position to assist valued employees who are experiencing substance misuse and addiction. However, individuals in these positions often hold misconceptions, are not trained to recognize signs and indicators that someone may be experiencing a drug or alcohol problem, and do not know about the community resources available to assist their workers.

Very few problems disrupt healthy family functioning like a substance misuse and addiction. When a individual in the family has an substance use problem it impacts everyone around them, especially immediate family and friends. Addiction is recognized scientifically a chronic relapsing brain disease but also as a family disease because the person with the problem is not the only person injured. Though the family member with the substance use problem may be loved and cared about, it is very common for families to hold misconceptions about the substance use problem and experience, hurt, anger, and feel desperate to help their loved one. Often, when families receive drug & alcohol education, they learn how to engage resources available to them in the community. They are better equipped to help the person with the problem, they learn to set healthy boundaries and develop coping skills that help insulate and protect the family. If someone in your family has a substances use problem, Covenant Training and Consulting offers:
